What Makes Us Family


Keith Richards began cooking chicken in a K-Mart kitchen and serving sweet tea in Styrofoam cups at a young age in Ensley, Alabama. His passion for food preparation, combined with a tireless work ethic, helped Keith move up the ranks to café manager at Birmingham’s award-winning restaurant Bottega Café.

After a trip to Greece with his wife in 1997, Keith returned to the South with a palate for Greek cuisine. The first Taziki’s opened in 1998 with 1,100 square feet just off of Highway 280 in Birmingham. Using his memory and a few family recipes as a guide, Keith cobbled together quite an impressive restaurant menu and welcomed 76 customers his first day. Now, almost 20 years later, his dream of providing Greek culinary creations for families looking for healthy choices has kept customers coming back time and time again.

Keith currently serves as Chief Development Officer with a charge to take the deliciously different food of Taziki’s to new tables across the U.S.

Our Story


In 1997, Keith Richards and his wife Amy were vacationing in Greece where they discovered small-table Mediterranean cafés where everyone in the community gathered together to connect around healthy flavors and to celebrate life! They enjoyed the food, but also observed a deeper kind of warmth and connection that moved them to say – “That’s what I want to spend my life doing.”  But how do you capture the feeling of family and friends around the table and the healthy Mediterranean lifestyle? Inspired, Keith and Amy returned home with a stack of photographs and a vision to import their experience by opening the first of many Mediterranean cafes in 1998.   They created a place free from the noise of the world and the fast pace of our busy lives.  They created a time to reconnect over refreshing Mediterranean flavors.  They designed a menu of interesting flavors real, home-made food.  Through all these years, and the addition of new Taziki’s across the country, they became a family of big-hearted foodies committed to making an impact in the community. 

At Taziki’s, we embrace the “Mediterranean Lifestyle” which emphasizes:

  • Eating primarily plant-based foods
  • Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil
  • Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods
  • Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month
  • Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week
  • Enjoying meals with family and friends
  • Drinking red wine in moderation (optional)
  • Getting plenty of exercise 


Over two millennia ago, Aristotle introduced the idea of Eudaimonia – a classical greek word that is commonly translated as “happiness,” but perhaps better described at “well-being” or “human flourishing” or “the good life”.  

While Eudaimonia describes a form of happiness, it is not the fleeting, temporary happiness that comes, say, from a bowl of ice cream or buying a new pair of shoes.  Eudaimonia is deeper, richer, more sustaining. It arises when we live well, love well and form strong connections with the people in our lives.  It is the foundation of strong communities.

This kind of happiness doesn’t come and go, moment to moment. It’s a more powerful reflection of contentment, satisfaction, gratefulness.

Rarely is this happiness felt more strongly than during a great meal in the company of people you love and respect. This kind of happiness sustains us long after the meal is over. It’s why the ceremony of food is central to every culture, because the table is the easiest place to build the bonds that hold our communities together.

Eudaimonia explains why it’s possible to fall in love with a small café in Greece, like Keith and Amy Richards did, even when you don’t speak a common language — in just a few short days. It’s not simply the food, but the powerful connections that can grow miraculously in the right setting.

Great food, in the right setting, prepared and served by people with the right mindset, can be the catalyst for that deeper, richer, more meaningful happiness.

And that’s what we do at Taziki’s. We focus our entire existence on creating Eudaimonia  That’s why we don’t have TVs in our restaurants.  That’s why we obsess over the quality of our food.  That’s why the kitchen is open, and the walls between guests and servers are knocked down.

We exist to create the kind of happiness that is found in few other places in modern life.  Today, our mission is to create an environment that combines extraordinary food with the meaningful human connection missing from much of society today — all to help people achieve a deeper, more sustaining form of happiness.
